Background of the Study
Out-of-pocket healthcare expenses, or direct payments made by patients for medical services, represent a significant challenge for individuals in many low- and middle-income countries, including Nigeria. In a healthcare system where insurance coverage is limited and government funding for health services is insufficient, patients often bear the full cost of healthcare services (Olowookere & Durojaiye, 2023). This financial burden can lead to delayed or inadequate care, increased poverty, and a significant impact on individuals' quality of life, particularly for vulnerable populations. In Nasarawa State, a significant portion of the population relies on public health facilities, but these facilities are often underfunded, leading to increased reliance on out-of-pocket spending.
Research has shown that out-of-pocket expenses are a major barrier to accessing healthcare in Nigeria, and this issue is exacerbated by the high cost of medical treatment and the absence of comprehensive health insurance schemes (Adebayo & Oyeniran, 2024). This study explores the extent to which out-of-pocket healthcare expenses affect patients in Nasarawa State, particularly in terms of access to and affordability of medical services.
Statement of the Problem
In Nasarawa State, the high cost of healthcare services, coupled with limited financial protection mechanisms, has led to significant out-of-pocket spending by patients. This financial burden is particularly challenging for low-income families, who are often forced to make difficult decisions regarding their health and wellbeing. As a result, patients may delay or forgo necessary medical treatments, leading to worse health outcomes. Understanding the extent of this financial burden is crucial for developing strategies to mitigate its negative impacts.
This study examines the financial burden of out-of-pocket healthcare expenses in Nasarawa State, focusing on how these expenses affect patients' access to healthcare services and their financial stability.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the financial burden of out-of-pocket healthcare expenses on patients in Nasarawa State.
2. To evaluate the impact of out-of-pocket healthcare costs on patients' access to healthcare services.
3. To identify strategies that can be implemented to reduce the financial burden of healthcare expenses for patients in Nasarawa State.
Research Questions
1. What is the extent of the financial burden of out-of-pocket healthcare expenses on patients in Nasarawa State?
2. How do out-of-pocket healthcare expenses affect patients' access to necessary medical care in Nasarawa State?
3. What strategies can be implemented to reduce the financial burden of healthcare expenses on patients in Nasarawa State?
Research Hypotheses
1. Out-of-pocket healthcare expenses in Nasarawa State significantly affect patients' ability to access medical care.
2. The financial burden of out-of-pocket healthcare costs in Nasarawa State leads to a decrease in overall healthcare utilization among low-income patients.
3. Implementing policies to reduce out-of-pocket healthcare expenses will significantly improve patients' access to necessary medical treatments in Nasarawa State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on patients receiving care from both public and private healthcare facilities in Nasarawa State. Limitations include potential biases in the self-reported financial data from patients and the difficulty in obtaining accurate cost-related data from healthcare providers.
